Inside Centrix: The AI System Powering MDX Line's Fleet Operations
Most trucking companies use a TMS to manage loads and a telematics platform to track trucks. MDX Line uses those too — Alvys for transportation management and Samsara for GPS and safety. But we also built something on top: Centrix, our proprietary AI-powered fleet management system.
Centrix is the layer that connects everything and makes it smarter.
What Centrix Does
Centrix ingests data from across our entire operation — load history, driver schedules, equipment status, traffic patterns, weather, customer preferences, and market conditions — and uses that data to support better decisions in real time.
It's not a replacement for human judgment. It's a tool that gives our dispatch team, operations managers, and drivers better information, faster.
Intelligent Load Matching
When a new load comes in, there are dozens of variables that determine which truck and driver should take it:
- Equipment type required (flatbed, van, step-deck)
- Driver's current location and available hours
- Driver's preferred lanes and home time schedule
- Load pickup and delivery windows
- Customer history and service requirements
- Fuel efficiency based on route options
A human dispatcher can juggle maybe five of these variables at once. Centrix evaluates all of them simultaneously and recommends the optimal match. The dispatcher still makes the final call — but they start with a recommendation that's already been optimized.
The Result
- Less deadhead (empty miles between loads)
- Better on-time performance
- Drivers run lanes they prefer
- Home time commitments are respected
Predictive Maintenance Intelligence
Trucks break down. That's reality. But there's a big difference between a breakdown on I-80 at midnight and a scheduled repair at the shop during a planned layover.
Centrix analyzes telematics data from Samsara — engine diagnostics, tire pressure trends, braking patterns, idle time, and mileage intervals — to predict when a truck is likely to need maintenance before it becomes an emergency.
How It Works
- Tracks wear patterns across the fleet, not just individual trucks
- Flags trucks approaching maintenance thresholds before they hit them
- Correlates operating conditions (temperature, terrain, load weight) with component wear
- Alerts the maintenance team with priority and estimated urgency
The Result
- Fewer roadside breakdowns
- Lower emergency repair costs
- Higher fleet availability
- Safer trucks on the road
Real-Time Decision Support
Freight doesn't follow a script. Loads cancel, weather changes, drivers call in sick, and receivers change delivery windows. When plans change, Centrix helps the team adapt:
- If a truck breaks down, Centrix identifies the nearest available replacement and recalculates the route to minimize delay
- If a delivery window changes, it evaluates whether the current driver can still make it or whether a relay is needed
- If weather closes a route, it suggests alternatives based on real-time conditions and truck-specific restrictions
- If a driver is approaching hours limits, it recommends rest stops and calculates whether a relay driver is needed
This isn't autopilot — it's decision support. The operations team still runs the show. But they run it with information that would take hours to compile manually, delivered in seconds.
Driver Performance Optimization
Centrix tracks fleet-wide performance patterns and provides individualized insights to help drivers improve:
- Fuel efficiency coaching — identifies driving patterns that increase fuel consumption and provides specific, actionable feedback
- Route optimization — learns which routes work best for specific freight types and conditions
- Safety trends — flags emerging patterns (increased hard braking, lane departures) before they become incidents
This isn't punitive surveillance. Drivers who improve their fuel efficiency save the company money and earn better bonuses. Drivers who maintain strong safety records stay on the road and keep their CDLs clean. Centrix makes it easier to do both.
Customer Intelligence
For shippers, Centrix powers a better experience behind the scenes:
- Shipment pattern analysis — we understand your freight patterns and can proactively suggest capacity before you need it
- Service level tracking — we know our on-time performance to your locations down to the dock door
- Proactive communication — when Centrix detects a potential delay, our team reaches out before you have to ask
Why We Built It
Off-the-shelf fleet management tools handle the basics. But every carrier's operation is different, and the nuances — driver preferences, customer relationships, equipment mix, lane history — are what separate good service from great service.
We built Centrix because we needed a system that understands our specific operation and gets smarter over time. Every load we haul, every route we run, and every decision we make feeds back into the system.
What This Means for You
If you're a shipper, Centrix means your freight is managed by a system that optimizes every variable, not just the obvious ones. Loads are matched better, problems are caught earlier, and communication is proactive.
If you're a driver, Centrix means your dispatcher has better tools to keep you moving, respect your schedule, and put you on loads that make sense for you — not just loads that fill a slot on a board.
Technology in trucking isn't about replacing people. It's about giving good people better tools. That's what Centrix does.
